RETAIL
UNITS A & B, PLOUGH LANE, WIMBLEDON, LONDON
This redevelopment transforms an existing commercial site in Merton’s retail park into a striking, contemporary landmark that merges functionality with aesthetics. The site was designed to refine a sense of flow and accessibility while enhancing the retail landscape along Plough Lane.
The two new 1,500 sqft units were thoughtfully positioned to maximise open space, access and shop frontage blending retail functionality with a visually engaging streetscape. A soft landscaped buffer created a seamless transition between the site and its surroundings. Further soft landscaping elements have been used to optimise circulation and direct foot traffic.
Inspired by the nearby AFC Wimbledon development, the architectural approach incorporates a modern palette of materials that forge a dynamic new silhouette for the retail park. The tall front elevation is defined by expansive glazing, establishing a bold, transparent frontage that connects visually to the street while revitalising the area’s industrial character. Projecting glazed tiles, frame the entrances and wrap back around the side elevations, adding depth and contrast through a layering of textures.
Raised above ground level to address flood risk, the units feature a decked frontage that offers outdoor seating, linking pedestrian pathways across different levels. Accessibility is central to the design, with blue badge spaces, level entrances, and thoughtfully planned pathways ensuring inclusivity and ease.
The building’s scale and innovative hardscape elements establish this redevelopment as both functional and inviting, crafting an engaging and accessible destination for the community.
