The extension to Greenwich Shopping Park completed a jigsaw 8 years in the making. BlackRock appointed RGP to design the critical link with the adjacent LXB development and a new public face for the park.
This development took an area that had lain waste for many years and created new restaurants and retail space as well as a brand new public realm. Frankie and Benny’s and Starbucks provide the food offer to increase dwell time and Matalan anchor the retail side. High street units for Card Factory and a gym complete the line-up.
The public realm is furnished with high quality pavings and seating arranged around a mature oak tree brought in for the development. Wildlife is also well-catered for, in a surprising manner and away from the public gaze. The roof of Frankie and Benny’s doubles-up as a nature sanctuary, with insect and bird-friendly wild planting as well as stone and lumber piles to provide shelter. The roof area also incorporates a security office for the park and, having immediately taken to the spirit of the zone they share, the security guards brought in their own bird and bug boxes to further enhance the habitat. We cannot claim credit for all of this, we can’t work without the support of a great team and, at Greenwich, the living roof and public realm design was masterminded by The Richards Partnership.
The completion of Greenwich Shopping Park is just part of RGP’s six-year involvement with this part of London, regenerating un-loved areas to provide for future growth. The aerial shot shows RGP’s projects shaded in red and positions them in the context of the Greenwich Peninsular.
