Chris Horner of RGP was invited by Prince Charles to attend St James Palace on behalf of Southgate District Civic Trust, for a briefing on a new Housing Design Tool Kit developed by The Princes Foundation for Building Community. SDCT is part of the national body, Civic Voice (formerly the Civic Trust) which represents Civic Societies across England and Wales and RGP are tasked with piloting the Toolkit before its release in Spring 2016 .
The tool kit has been developed to counteract ‘Nimbyism’. There is a need for new housing development and many projects fail to materialise due to poor design, or local opposition. The BIMBY Toolkit has been developed to empower communities to develop local housing strategies that will meet their needs and create homes designed to blend into the local area. The tool kits can then be used to inform local housing developers and planning officers of the community requirements.
The tool kit is an interactive web based programme and requires input from all parties in the local community to build a picture of what they require.
The process is based around community workshop events, including:
- Establishing community requirements
- Identifying areas for new homes
- Choosing popular buildings with local character
